Course Structure for Bachelor of Animal and Veterinary Bioscience (BAnVetBioSc)

In each year students undertake 48 credit points of study.

Year 1: Fundamentals of Animal Science

First year is a foundation science year, providing the building blocks for more detailed studies in animal science in later years. Core study areas are biology, chemistry, introductory animal science and handling, introductory statistics and the rural environment.

 Units of Study  Cr Points
Concepts of Animal Management  6
The Rural Environment  6
Cell Biology 1B  6
Concepts in Biology or Concepts in Biology Advanced  6
Living Systems or Living Systems Advanced  6
Chemistry 1A or Fundamentals of Chemistry 1A  6
Chemistry 1B or Fundamentals of Chemistry 1B  6
Introductory Statistical Methods  6

Year 2: Comparative studies building on the fundamentals

Second year studies are more in depth, giving students a comparative approach and building on the science fundamentals acquired in first year. Second year units provide a solid basis for the applied animal science units, introducing students to foundational subject areas such as animal anatomy and physiology, health and disease, genetics and conservation biology.

Units of Study Cr Points
Animal Structure and Function A & B 6 + 6
Animal Conservation Biology 6
Introductory Veterinary Pathogenesis 6
Economic Environment of Agriculture 6
Applied Statistical Methods 6
Agricultural Chemistry 6
Agricultural Genetics 2 6

Year 3: Applied Animal Science

Third year involves more in-depth, applied studies in animal science. Core study areas are: animal nutrition, reproduction and genetics. Students will have the opportunity to follow their own interests by choosing electives in: animal behaviour and welfare science, animal health and disease, animal biotechnology, ecology, marketing, business management, food biochemistry, statistics for the natural sciences and environmental assessment.

*The Professional Development unit of study incorporates the Professional Experience Program which is a work-experience based program completed throughout the degree. Please visit the Professional Experience Program webpage for more information.

Year 4: Advanced Animal Science and Research

All students complete an individual animal science research project in an area they are interested in and advanced coursework units in fourth year. All students complete a minimum of 12 credit points of research (Research Project B1 & B2) and 36 credit points of advanced coursework units in the final year. Alternatively, students with sufficient academic achievement in years 1-3 of the course may apply for permission to undertake a 24 credit point project (Research Project A1, A2, A3 & A4) and 24 credit points of advanced coursework.

Year 4 Research Project

All students complete either Research Project B or Research Project A (with permission).
