Presenting Signs
Cyclopia results when the front part of the foetus’ brain fails to divide normally into two hemispheres. This can be caused by defective genes or by certain toxins. Affected kittens have only one large eye. The nose is typically missing or there is a proboscis (resembles a nose) which is non-functioning and positioned below the large eye. Kittens are generally stillborn or die within a few hours of birth. They may have some primitive reflexes but have no higher brain function.
