Presenting Signs
-
Elbow luxation is the dislocation of the elbow joint. Congenital elbow luxation frequently affects both forelimbs and is often present in several kittens from the same litter. The forelimbs may be shorter than normal and curved, and may show varying degrees of pain and lameness. In mild cases there may be no pain or difficulty walking. Elbow luxations usually occur laterally (outwards away from the body) rather than medially (inwards towards the body) due to the structure of the elbow joint. This results in firm swellings on the outer surface of the elbow. Degenerative joint disease can develop later in life, leading to lameness.
