Qualifications

Evan graduated from Sydney University in Veterinary Science in 1978 with 2nd class honours. He became a Member of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in 1989, by examination in epidemiology, and has recently completed a PhD on the epidemiology of ovine Johne's disease in Australia with a focus on diagnosis, prevalence estimation and risk analysis.

Professional Experience

Evan Sergeant is a senior consultant with AusVet Animal Health Services. He has a practical background, with 18 years as a District Veterinarian in New South Wales.

As a field veterinarian, Evan has been involved in disease control and surveillance programs at the front-end. From this background he has developed a wide range of epidemiological skills, particularly in the areas of disease surveillance, animal health information systems, simulation modelling and quantitative risk analysis.

Contribution to the Profession

Evan has made significant contributions to epidemiology and disease control in Australia at both State and national levels. As an epidemiologist working for NSW Agriculture and since then with AusVet he has contributed to the ongoing development and refinement of state and national programs for both ovine and bovine Johne's disease and the National Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy Surveillance Program.

Research

Evan is the author or co-author of numerous scientific papers and conference presentations, including a number of recent papers on the epidemiology and diagnosis of ovine Johne's disease. He has also been involved in the design, development, implementation, and management of a number of information systems in Australia and Asia.
