Virtual Practitioner has been developed to allow students at an advanced stage of their course to work through cases with several layers of decision-making. It simulates the complexities that a practitioner would encounter from initial consultation through differential diagnosis to treatment and follow-up.
When a student enters a Virtual Practitioner case they see a simple screen that gives some background information. They move to the next screen and can begin examining the animal by choosing some procedures from a list of links on the right hand side. Each screen involves either choosing tests or entering information about the case on the right hand side. Each screen also shows the student's previous choices or input displayed on the left hand side.
The image below shows a screen halfway through Virtual Practitioner. The student has performed an initial examination and has made some decisions about diagnosis and management. This input has been logged on the left hand side. They are now being asked to select some tests; the costs for these are recorded and subtracted from a budget each time they choose a test.
This resource is used as an individual formative or summative assessment task during final year rotations to determine each students understanding of the entire diagnostic and treatment process.
