Small Animal Referral Policy
As the UVTHC Small Animal Service is staffed by faculty who also have teaching, research and additional responsibilities, referrals will be accepted by the various clinicial services and will be seen by the clinicians on duty rather than by a specific faculty member. This is the case even if you have spoken to a specific faculty member and they have encouraged you to refer the case to us.
We operate a clinical service orientated system with frequent internal referral within our small animal services. This enables cases to be directed to whichever clinician has the appropriate expertise to treat the individual animal.
All referrals should have a booked appointment with one of our services. If a referral is an emergency, send your client on their way and then call us to let us know the details and the estimated arrival time.
If a referral clinician is unavailable for any reason, referrals will be accepted by an intern or resident under the supervision of the senior clinician on duty.
As a referring veterinarian, you will receive a final written report from the appropriate small animal service after the case is discharged.
