Sydney University Settlement

Sydney University Settlement was previously known as the Sydney University Womens’ Social Service Society. It was founded by Lady Jersey in 1891 with the object of providing a field of social work in the Chippendale and South Sydney area.

The Womens’ and Girls’ Annual Competition was open to all girls’ and mothers’ clubs in the area.

The Settlement Annual Ball was revived in 1946 as due to the war the last ball was in 1941. His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester, Governor-General of Australia, received seventy debutantes. “The record sum of £395 3s. 1d was raised” (University Settlement Annual Report, April 1946-March 1947)

If you are interested in finding out more about the Settlement, the University Archives has the records.
