Dr John B Lear
John is qualified as a chemical engineering with a
first class honours degree from the University of Sydney and the University Medal. He also
has a doctorate degree from the University of Sydney in the area of Advanced Process
Control.
He is a corporate member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, a Certified
Professional Engineer with the Institution of Engineers, Australia and is registered on
the National Professional Engineers Register (NPER-3).
John holds the following professional association positions

John is the Control and Modelling Specialist for Orica (formerly ICI Australia),
providing specialist consulting services across the Orica Group internationally, in the
areas of process control, process modelling, automation safety and manufacturing
improvement. He was jointly responsible for developing the CHAZOP approach to reviewing
the safety and operability of automation systems and the Orica corporate manufacturing
improvement process.
In 1993 John was recognised internationally within the ICI Group with the Functional
Excellence ICEE Award for Innovation Creativity and Engineering Excellence for Advanced
Distillation Control.
He is currently the chairman of the Events Committee of The Warren Centre. Previous
association with the University of Sydney includes, board membership and Presidency of the
Sydney University Chemical Engineering Association, and membership of the Executive of the
Chemical Engineering Foundation (1999 2001).
He has produced over 35 papers and presentations, is an invited contributor to national
publications and a referee for international journals. He is also a guest lecturer at the
University of New South Wales.
John was instrumental in organising the Australasian MOD300 Users Group and the
SPEEDUP Users Group meeting in Australia. He was also an organiser of Control 97
the Australian Control Conference.
