The
Last Word
The
headlines below link to about one quarter of the articles focusing on
innovation that we received as a result of our request for
input in our last bulletin.
Simplistically, the process of innovation starts with a
discovery or idea and only ends when that has been put to good use.
Good use is typically measured by financial value but delivered
value to the community is an equally valid measure.
We invite your comments, questions and suggestions preferably by
email or by way of our discussion board. Whether you wish to comment about
the articles, engineering issues, or suggest future articles, we
look forward to hearing from you.
Our focus on innovation in this issue is directly related to the
2006 Innovation Lecture to be delivered by Dr Don Fry AO on 7 June
in Melbourne and 8 June in Sydney. Be there!

Our next edition, distributed in August, will have
Metropolitan Water as its focus and we welcome your
submission of a short (500 word) article to be received by us before
1 July.
A good idea
is just
the start of the journey
One time fitter & turner now engineer and Adjunct Professor at the
University of Queensland, Dr Don Fry knows that as well as curiosity,
a practical turn of mind, some organisational skills, and a lot of
energy and optimism, if you want to commercialise innovation, a good
sense of humour will also come in very handy!
Innovation is incomplete until the money's in the bank
It is vital to
understand that the process of innovation is not complete until
someone writes a cheque! Then the important question to be asked is:
how can innovation be nurtured? Lessons from the master!
Innovation's not
just about the propeller heads
Innovation policy in
this country has suffered from what might be called Propeller Head
Syndrome, impractical boffins in white lab coats ...
Environmental performance now essential for commercial buildings
Higher environmental
performance is now very much on the agenda for all who own or manage
commercial office space. Focused management, and attention to detail
will produce big results.
There is a plethora
of good product innovation stories
We present 12 of over 40 articles we received ranging from the oil industry
through voice recognition and medical devices to technology for the
disabled! Click here to find them all
Pathways to
Technological Innovation
Innovation systems, not research systems, produce economic or
community value. Australia is weak at converting initial business
concepts into industry-relevant, pre-production products.
Disproportionate investment into knowledge generation rather than
innovation does little for Australia's trade deficit and foreign
debt.
Seven
suggestions for more inspired innovation
Anybody ever
handed you a losing business plan? Remember: “Persistence is an
importance element of success and an essential element of failure”!
and other useful heuristics.
The Warren Centre needs your support
We rely on the goodwill and self-interest of a growing team of
volunteers to drive our activities forward and to provide the
capital and operating funds to underwrite them.
