These Guidelines apply to staff and students whose work or study takes them into animal houses. 'Animal house' refers to any designated animal house or internal animal holding area.

The guidelines are consistent with relevant Australian Standards and NHMRC guidelines, including the Australian code of practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes (2004). They are intended to assist University Departments and Faculties to meet the specific requirements of the NSW Animal Research Act 1985 and Animal Research Regulations 2010, and their 'duty of care' to provide a healthy and safe workplace, under the NSW Occupational Health & Safety Act (2000).
