Mardi Gras application form

Your chance to dance at the Mardi Gras parade

Expressions of interest are now open to volunteer for Mardi Gras in 2019.

The 2019 Mardi Gras season is fast approaching! And as official sponsors of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, we're inviting staff and students from our community to get involved, learn something new and bust a move on Oxford Street.

If you’re interested in participating in the parade or Fair Day, please fill out your details in the form below to let us know why you're keen and we'll be in touch soon. Please note, we have a limited number of places for students and staff to get involved and we would like to give students and staff who identify as LGBTIQ the first opportunity to secure a place.

Before you start your application, please read the below information about required commitment.

Fair Day

Fair Day will take place on Sunday 17 February at Victoria Park in Camperdown. It's a fun and festive event that attracts more than 80,000 people each year. There will be live entertainment, delicious food and vendors from the local community and a diverse and positive crowd of attendees. It's also a great way to learn more about local LGBTIQ organisations.

We are looking for volunteers to help us run our Fair Day stall. If you would like to get involved (each shift will be two hours long) please submit your interest below. Your participation will involve talking about the University's Pride Network and Mardi Gras and taking many selfies with our other wonderful participants.

Mardi Gras Parade

The world-renowned Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade will take place on Saturday 2 March. We will have a vibrant float that embodies our theme for this year: Knowledge conquers fear. We're welcoming dancers and walkers to represent the University on our float.

Required commitment

Below is some important information about the commitment required if you decide to join us.

  • You will need to attend 2-3 dance rehearsal sessions. Each rehearsal will take around an hour and a half. Don't stress if you're not a Madonna on the dancefloor – we're putting together a simple choreographed dance so everyone can be involved. The rehearsal sessions will be on the following days:
    • Wednesday 13 February at 5–6.30pm at the Uni No 2. TAG Foundation Grandstand Function Room
    • Tuesday 19 February at 12–1.30pm at the Sydney Uni Sports and Aquatic Centre, basketball courts 3 and 4
    • Wednesday 27 February at 5–6.30pm, Sydney Uni Sports and Aquatic Centre at the show courts.
  • On 2 March, you’ll need to arrive early (around 2pm) at Cadigal Green to collect your costume and a final rehearsal. We’ll then be heading to the city to get ready for the parade.
  • Walk (and dance) with the University of Sydney float for the duration of the Parade. The parade is estimated to start at 6pm and finish around 11.30pm. The official march down Oxford Street takes about 45 minutes.
