Biographical details

Dr Phil Gough is a Lecturer in Biological Design in the Design Lab and the Program Director of the Major in Biological Design. He teaches between the Design Lab and School of Life and Environmental Sciences in biological design, creative coding, interaction design and data visualisation. His research at Westmead looks into applications of design-driven biology.

Phil completed a postdoc at the School of IT, with the Human-Centred Technology research cluster, and then as a lecturer in Curriculum Innovation at School of Life and Environmental Sciences. He applies a background in HCI, digital art and design to explore creativity-led data visualisation. He has built interactive data visualisations as art installations, educational feedback, scientific visualisations and statistical research. He is currently engaged with creating new learning activities for science students that develop their digital literacy into digital fluency, placing students in the role of creators using design methods, creative code, effective communication models, multimedia production, 3D printing and microelectronics.

Research interests

Phil is researching design-driven biology, or biodesign. This nascent field applies design methods to define a problem from user needs, which can be solved with the application of cutting-edge medical science research. This research is highly interdisciplinary, and Phil is looking for new opportunities to expand research in this area.

Phil's research also explores creativity-led data visualisation. This includes the way that artists and designers create data visualisations, their methods, motivations and reflections on the visalisation process. Phil also investigates how creative activities contribute to science education, as well as developing new activities for teaching science that places students in the role of creator to help them understand complex scientific concepts.
