Biographical details

Maïa Ponsonnet joined the Linguistics Department at the University of Sydney as a DECRA Post-doctoral Fellow in 2016. In September 2017 she transferred to The University of Western Australiawhere she is now a Senior Lecturer, but she remains an Honorary Associate with The University of Sydney's Department of Linguistics.

Maïa studies expressivity and the encoding of emotions in language, with a particular interest in Indigenous Australian languages. She earned a PhD in Linguistics at the Australian National University in 2013 with a thesis on expressivity and emotions in Dalabon, a severely endangered Gunwinyguan language of Arnhem Land (northern Australia). She also works on several other languages of the same region including Rembarrnga, Kune, and Kriol (a creole now spoken in northern Australia), comparing these languages with others in Australia and around the world. Her research exploresthe universals of linguistic expressivity andthe role of languagein the way humans share, manage and experience emotions.
