A testament to the power of interdisciplinary studies
Juliette Marchant’s academic journey at the University of Sydney serves as a compelling endorsement of the value and impact of interdisciplinary education.

Juliette’s experiences as a student of the Bachelor of Arts (Government and International Relations) and Laws illustrate how integrating diverse fields of study can pave the way for academic excellence and professional success. As the University of Sydney introduces the new Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (BPPE) in 2025, Juliette’s story underscores why this innovative program is poised to shape the next generation of thought leaders.

Juliette’s decision to study at the University of Sydney was driven by her interest in the intersection of politics and philosophy. "As someone whose interests were teetering on the edge of Politics and Philosophy, the Government and International Relations program at the University of Sydney was instantly appealing," she recalls. The ability to take electives in the Philosophy discipline allowed her to explore her interests deeply and develop a well-rounded understanding of political science and theory.

The new BPPE degree promises to enhance this interdisciplinary approach by integrating politics, philosophy, political economy and economics into a single, comprehensive curriculum. This program will provide students with a broad foundation, enabling them to explore diverse academic interests and career paths.

Juliette’s academic success, highlighted by winning the University Medal in Politics and International Relations in 2021, was driven by her clear focus and the mentorship she received at the University. "Two main factors contributed to my success: a clear sense of my primary interest in political theory and the excellent academic mentors who guided me," she says. Her mentors, particularly Professor Alex Lefebvre, played a crucial role in shaping her academic journey by fostering critical thinking and encouraging rigorous debate.

Juliette’s time at the University was enriched by various extracurricular activities, which played a significant role in her development. "Working on the university newspaper and podcast captured what I think is the essence of the university experience – a fine balance of collaboration, creativity, questioning, and most importantly, listening," Juliette says. These experiences allowed her to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings and engage with diverse perspectives.

Juliette’s journey continues as she embarks on a PhD in Political Theory at Harvard University, inspired by influential figures like Judith Shklar. Her dedication to amplifying overlooked voices and addressing gaps in social, legal, and political thought reflects her commitment to making a meaningful impact.
