Centre for AI, Trust and Governance

Welcome to the Centre for AI, Trust and Governance
The AI, Trust and Governance Centre (AITG) at the University of Sydney is our flagship hub for research and innovation examining the complexities of emergent AI technologies from a socio-technical perspective.

Our mission is to enhance understanding of trust within societies while paving the way for advancements in safety, governance, and law.

At AITG, we believe in the power of interdisciplinary collaboration to tackle pressing challenges. By harnessing diverse perspectives and expertise, we develop practical, implementable solutions that not only inspire but also drive meaningful and equitable change in our societies.

We draw upon academic disciplines associated with humanities, social sciences, law, communication, business, the arts and design, in collaboration with the sciences, computing and engineering.

Join us in this transformative journey toward digital futures where AI development, deployment and use can be informed by principles of equity and justice, a commitment to trust and integrity, and effective stewardship through policy and governance.

"How is Artificial Intelligence rapidly transforming social, political and cultural institutions?"

and

"What could and should be done to shape the development, deployment and use of AI?"

The AI, Trust and Governance Research Centre at the University of Sydney is at the forefront of exploring these complex intersections between artificial intelligence, societal trust, and governance and policy frameworks.

We are dedicated to advancing responsible AI development and implementation through multi-disciplinary research, fostering public trust, and informing policy decisions in complex regulatory environments.

We uniquely combine expertise from the humanities, arts, social sciences, law, business, design, digital sciences and engineering to address the multifaceted opportunities and challenges posed by AI technologies in their development, deployment and use.

Our guiding principles are centred on the interconnected principles of Equity and Justice; Trust and Integrity; and Policy and Governance.

Equity and Justice: Provides the framework for treating all individuals with respect and fairness, addressing systemic inequalities, and promoting equal opportunities.

Policy and governance: Promote accountability and transparency in automated decision-making and digital governance.

Trust and integrity: Fosters a culture of honesty, reliability, and ethical behaviour, which is crucial for building and maintaining credibility with stakeholders, employees, and the wider community.

Together, these guiding principles create a robust ethical infrastructure that supports sustainable, responsible, and inclusive practices across all areas of our research.
