Opening night: Wednesday, 15 May, 6pm - 8pm
Curated by Sebastian Henry-Jones, Basic Unit of Display highlights exciting video and filmic work by Australian artists, focusing on resourcefully-made pieces that embody a DIY ethos. The exhibition delves into the conditions within the small-to-medium sector of the arts, which has faced significant underfunding in recent years, especially for the production and presentation of experimental video works.
The decision to create art in a DIY manner can stem from aesthetic, ideological, or economic reasons. Presented in a relatively well-resourced university gallery, Basic Unit of Display seeks to establish connections between the low-fidelity image, the equipment available to artists, the infrastructure delivering art to audiences in the small-to-medium, artist-run sphere, and the culture of critical thought historically associated with experimental practices and spaces.
As the fourth exhibition in an annual series highlighting Artist-Run Initiatives, this exhibition aims to underscore the dynamic, inventive, and collaborative nature of contemporary ARIs.
