Dr Matthew Egan

Matthew is a Senior Lecturer within the Business School’s Discipline of Accounting. His research interests focus primarily on sustainability, and how accounting can contribute to addressing related questions. Specifically, his research has focused on diversity and inclusion, water management, water accounting, and financial accounting. Matthew's research interests stem primarily from practical challenges emerging in industry, and the innovations and developments that occur in response to those challenges. Recent research has exploring LGBTI+ diversity developments within the ‘Big 4’ professional services firms including perceptions of the value of related initiatives, insights into factors driving related change, and perceptions of how related change impact on staff and clients. Matthew takes all of this research into the classroom, in his teaching of units focused on both financial accounting and sustainability accounting.

Matthew’s research interests focus on water management, water accounting, water accountability, accounting in support of sustainability management initiatives, and the role for accountants in water accounting and sustainability management. Other research interests focus on accountability, public-private partnerships, and financial reporting. Methodologically, Matthew is interested in the richness and complexity of case studies utilising interview processes, but also enjoys making sense of related developments through publicly availed documentation. Matthew’s research interests stem primarily from practical challenges emerging in industry, and the innovations and developments that occur in response to those challenges. Matthew is interested in how management in industry draw on their accounting systems and accountants to inform water related, and sustainability initiatives. Matthew is also interested in the practical challenges for the water sector in different countries to meet their basic objectives, and to provide accountability, and engagement with the public. Recent research that explores water management in Ghana, is also focused on learnings for public-private partnerships.
