In a recent study, Dr Massimo Garbuio and a team of researchers looked at four strategies of design cognition – framing, analogical reasoning, abduction and mental simulation – to train students in opportunity creation.
Design thinking is a hot topic at the moment. "But now we need to take another step towards design cognition, and that’s when we really think like designers," Massimo says. "It's a process where we are constantly looking for dots, dots that we can connect and make into innovative ideas."
The research provides avenues for further development of entrepreneurship education, particularly the integration of design cognition.
A lot of innovation today focuses on apps or marketplaces. We need to leverage the great academic research that we have in this country and make it, as well as our intellectual property, more transparent and readily available to visionary entrepreneurs.
