While participating in the Engineering Sydney Industry Placement Scholarship (ESIPS) program at Fenner Conveyors, Bramya gained hands-on industry experience, technical skill development, and a pathway to automation and industrial innovation.
What motivated you to apply for the ESIPS program?
I applied to the program after reviewing the experiences of other students, which provided valuable insights into the impact of ESIPS. As an international student, this opportunity was an ideal starting point for launching my professional career in Australia. Additionally, I was drawn to the project because it focused on control and automation, areas that align closely with my long-term career goals and aspirations.
What was your experience with the program?
My experience has been truly transformational. I had the opportunity to work on upgrading the electrical test bay at Fenner Conveyors in Somersby, a company specialising in producing underground electrical substations for coal mining operations. I implemented remote monitoring and control features using PLC and HMI technologies during this project.
PLC and HMI technologies play a crucial role in industrial automation, enabling the control of machinery and processes. PLCs act as computers that handle inputs and outputs, while HMIs serve as user-friendly interfaces for operators to monitor and manage the system.
My thesis focused on automating the test bay to minimise human intervention while enabling remote access and control to monitor parameters from the client's location, ultimately reducing operational costs.
As an international student, this opportunity was an ideal starting point for launching my professional career in Australia.

What were the biggest challenges, and how did you overcome them?
One key challenge I faced during the project was ensuring cost efficiency. The upgrade aimed to generate cost savings and not increase expenses despite adding automation features. To address this, I extensively researched alternative technologies using off-the-shelf components, ensuring that the automation solutions remained practical and cost-effective.
What skills did you develop during your program?
Throughout the project, I developed various technical skills, including proficiency in AutoCAD, PLC programming, HMI development, process visualisation, and documentation such as test report generation and procedural writing. Additionally, I worked on a multidisciplinary project, collaborating with project managers, the engineering team, IT specialists, and the workshop personnels. This experience enhanced my communication and teamwork skills.
It also strengthened my problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and capacity to work effectively in a dynamic, cross-functional environment.
How has the ESIPS program influenced your career goals or plans?
The program significantly influenced my career goals by equipping me with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in automation engineering. Through my project, I deepened my understanding of automation software and technologies.
As an electrical engineer, this experience opened my eyes to the vast potential of IIoT-enabled devices and their role in revolutionising industries. The program helped me develop technical expertise and sparked a strong interest in the growing field of industrial automation, shaping my future career trajectory toward becoming an automation engineer.
Do you have any advice for other students wanting to take part in the ESIPS program?
I advise anyone starting the program to embrace the opportunity, regardless of the challenges. While the project may require relocation or stepping out of your comfort zone, the experience is invaluable for personal and professional growth.
Resilience is key in such endeavours—stay adaptable and persistent in overcoming obstacles. By maintaining focus and determination, you'll be able to contribute effectively to the project and gain skills and insights that will be beneficial in the long run.
