From childhood dreams to reality

From visiting Featherdale Wildlife Park at 3 years old, working at his local pet supply store at 15, to pursuing veterinary science at the University of Sydney, Harry Sollom's path to becoming a vet was clear from a young age. 

We caught up with Harry, a 2022 graduate of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

Harry now works as a vet at North Richmond Vet Hospital in NSW and shares how his course equipped him to pursue his dream job.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Sydney?

The University has a great reputation and always ranks highly in the QS World University Rankings for veterinary science.

Being close to my family and friends was also a massive bonus as I’m a Sydney local.

Tell us about your role and what does it involve?

As a veterinarian, my key role is ensuring that any animal I see is better off for it.

Whether it’s giving a cute puppy its first vaccination or performing important surgery on a guinea pig.

My job involves a diverse array of tasks that can change from day to day.

Which skills from your degree do you use most often in your job?

The most valuable skills I learned were throughout my many clinical placements in the final year of my degree. I learned so many real-world skills that prepared me to immediately transition to a vet.

What's your biggest career achievement?

So far it’s been winning an award for the Most Commendable Paper Published in the Australian Veterinary Journal for a research article I wrote about Bearded Dragons.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your role or industry?

It can sometimes be difficult to come across many different personalities daily. It’s important to try and gauge how much a comprehending the advice and adjusting this to ensure their pet is provided the best care possible.

What advice would you offer to students considering a career in your field?

Studying to become a vet and working as a vet can be challenging at times. It’s important to remember to take time out for yourself and what you enjoy doing outside of work and study to stay refreshed.
