About Advanced Studies Coursework in Humanities

Undertaking this Humanities option will extend your knowledge and critical thinking skills through challenging coursework and a 4000-level project: an opportunity to experience work outside the classroom by collaborating on a substantial real-world project in a professional, community or entrepreneurial setting. This coursework year will equip you with the skills and experience to follow your career aspirations and develop networks beyond the classroom.

Our humanities pathway covers wide-ranging subjects from ancient history and literature to language studies and film studies. See below example of the various areas you can choose to study within the humanities pathway:  

• Literature, art and media – offers a tailored program to your disciplinary interests. You will engage in advanced seminars that complement your individual research in project units within the study of arts-based practices such as visual art, film, performance and writing, as well as literature, linguistics, or live and digitised media. In the Bachelor of Advanced Studies students will have the opportunity to apply disciplinary knowledge and methodologies to the legacies of the past, the complexities of the present and possible futures in the areas of communication, literature and art. Relvant majors include: Art History; Digital Cultures; English; Film Studies; Linguistics; Theatre and Performance Studies or equivalent majors.
• Languages and cultures - prepares you to actively engage in the complex and culturally diverse contemporary world. You will utilise linguistic and methodological skills developed in their previous studies to develop their knowledge on institutions, practices and ideas that permeate different cultures in the local and global context. You will be offered opportunities to participate in projects on translation, acculturation and self-reflexivity and to examine textual and social real-world problems related to topics which include translation, migration studies, cultural diversity and social integration. Relevant majors include: Arabic Language and Cultures; Chinese Studies; French and Francophone Studies; Germanic Studies; Biblical Studies and Classical Hebrew; Indonesian Studies; Italian Studies; Japanese Studies; Korean Studies; Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies; Spanish and Latin American Studies; American Studies; Asian Studies; European Studies; International Comparative Literature Studies and Translation Studies or equivalent majors.
• Philosophy and historical inquiry – teaches you how to apply research training from our unique disciplines, develop an interdisciplinary capacity with methodology, pose problems and consider their solutions in scenarios sourced from history, philosophy, archaeology, ancient history, or gender and cultural studies. Emphasis is placed on developing the ability to apply methods of philosophical, historical, cultural, gender or archaeological inquiry to contemporary problem-solving and to communicate findings to non-academic and culturally diverse audiences via emerging digital media.
