Minor

Ethnomusicology is the study of all forms of music (and dance) in their social and cultural context. It is a highly interdisciplinary approach that explores what music is in all its many forms around the world, and to ask why it is that way.

Ethnomusicologists consider both musical sounds and the historical, social and cultural processes within which they are embedded, and learning to understand music from the position of a participant is integral to its research methods.

Graduate opportunities

Graduates who have studied ethnomusicology have the skills to better understand global cultures, and to work cross-culturally in a very wide range of fields beyond music. They are successful as radio interviewers, public sector community advocates, in NGOs and Arts management and administration, and as educators. Others continue research and advocacy in particular communities or regions, or on certain cross-cultural musical issues.
