The lectures on High Energy Physics cover the basic constituents of matter, such as quarks and leptons, examining their fundamental properties and interactions. They include some discussion of extensions to the currently accepted Standard Model of Particle Physics, and of the relationships between High Energy Particle Physics, Cosmology and the early Universe. The lectures on Optics introduce some aspects of modern optics, using the laser to illustrate the applications. They cover the Lorentz model for the optical properties of matter, spontaneous and stimulated emission of light, rate equation analysis of lasers, diffraction, Gaussian beam propagation, anisotropic media and nonlinear optics. In the Laboratory Classes, students will choose from a range of experiments that aim to give them an appreciation of the analytical, technical and practical skills required to conduct modern experimental work.
