#edtech talks: Mark McEntee and Melanie Keep

Flipping the classroom
A flippin’ engaging experience

Flipping the classroom engaged our students to such an extent that our marking rubrics became inappropriate. Students worked harder, engaged in more discussions, practiced more, attended more often, felt a sense of community, felt self-efficacious and ultimately had higher results. It was a steep learning curve for educational designers and academics alike, but was a massive engaged learning and user-experience win.

Providing an intuitive mechanism for accessing content increases usage. Thoughtful student-focused educational design encourages student engagement with content. Come hear our story.

Assoc Prof. Mark McEntee is a subject expert in Diagnostic Radiography, and helps students to unravel the mysteries of radiation and anatomy. He always seeks to make the lesson engaging. His teaching approach is the Aligned use of Technology for Engaged Enquiry aligning student objectives, learning, and online and in-class assessment.

Previous teaching awards include:

  • 2014: Vice-Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Teaching
  • 2013: Faculty of Health Sciences (USYD) Outstanding Teaching Award 2013.

Learning analytics / Personalised learning
Provide personalised learning and reduce your inbox: using learning analytics to promote online discussions

A diverse student body and large classes can wreak havoc on your inbox and present challenges for creating personalised learning support for your students. This session will demonstrate quick-to-implement strategies used to engage students with online discussion forums (instead of emailing you) and provide them with personalised support. These strategies are based on research on the effectiveness of discussion forums for supporting student learning.

There will also be a showcase of the Student Relationship Engagement System (SRES) for efficiently providing students with a personalised learning experience.

Dr Melanie Keep (nee Nguyen) is an early career researcher with a focus on eHealth, the use of technology to improve healthcare, and supporting the student experience. Underpinning Dr Keep’s research is a motivation to facilitate access to healthcare and enhance the training of future health professionals for a health sector that increasingly includes eHealth methods and interventions. In particular, she is interested in examining the role of communication between patients and health practitioners for better outcomes and how this changes in the eHealth context.

With a focus on building student leadership, Dr Keep’s scholarship of learning and teaching has included building opportunities for undergraduate research (in large scale programs as well as mentoring small groups of junior undergraduate students in research) and peer mentoring.
