Highly-cited researcher joins School of Information Technology
Professor Tao wil work on computer vision, deep learning, and statistical learning in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Techology.
Professor Dacheng Tao
In 2015 and 2016 he was ranked by Thomson Reuters as a Highly Cited Researcher for Engineering and Computer Science.
In 2015 he received the Australian Scopus –Eureka Prize, and in the same year obtained the ACS Gold Disruptor Award.
His research predominantly covers artificial intelligence (AI), with a focus on computer vision, deep learning, and statistical learning, as well as their applications to robotics, neuroscience, medical informatics, and video surveillance.
Professor Tao is excited to be joining the university as he believes “it has a history of achieving research excellence, passing frontier knowledge on to students, and for building the base to change lives for the better.”
He is particularly enthusiastic about the opportunities to explore AI.
“AI is more achievable than ever because of the combination of big data and deep learning," says Professor Tao.
"In the coming years I will work closely with highly-regarded academics in the university to plant AI technologies in different fields to help domain experts better discover knowledge; explore mathematical and statistical tools to provide theoretical justifications and guarantees for the algorithms and applications of deep learning; and to prototype the next generation of intelligent systems for practical deployment.”
Professor Tao comes to the university with a wealth of knowledge attained through his work at the Centre for Quantum Computation and Intelligent Systems and the Centre for Artificial Intelligence at the University of Technology Sydney, Nanyang Technological University and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and will be a valuable asset to the university.
