Sydney maintains strong engineering and computer science reputation

Among the world’s top 75 universities
The University of Sydney continues its strong global performance in the areas of engineering and computer science following the latest rankings announced by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings and US News Best Global Universities.
The University of Sydney has been ranked in the top 75 universities worldwide for both engineering and computer science according to both the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings and US News Best Global Universities.
In the 2022 US News Best Global Universities Rankings, Sydney is ranked 41st in engineering and 38th for computer science – up nine spots from 47th in 2021.
The US News rankings also showed strong performance across engineering subjects, with Sydney now 11th globally for electrical and electronic engineering, 40th for civil engineering, and 48th for mechanical engineering.
A significant jump from 22nd in the world to 11th, electrical and electronic engineering is now one of the University’s highest performing subjects.
The US News methodology focuses on factors that measure research performance, including number of scholarly papers, books and highly cited papers as well as international collaborations.
The 2022 THE World University Rankings by subject has seen Sydney accelerate in the rankings for the category of "Engineering and Technology" consistently each year, having risen from 93rd in 2019 to 65th in 2022.
Furthermore, the university is now ranked 74th globally in the category of "Computer Science".
The THE rankings evaluate more than 1,000 universities in engineering and technology and over 700 universities in computer science worldwide.
The final rankings are decided based on a range of factors, including performance in teaching, research influence and industry income.
"The Faculty of Engineering’s research strengths and continual efforts to innovate are key to our consistently strong performance in university rankings", said Professor Willy Zwaenepoel, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.
"Having launched the Digital Sciences Initiative earlier this year to embed and enhance 21st century digital skills within research and across undergraduate degrees, I am pleased to see that the rankings reflect the work of our academics and researchers."
The University of Sydney’s achievements in the subject rankings follows the announcement that it has maintained its position as first in Australia and fourth globally for graduate employability, by the 2022 QS Employability Rankings.
