Why did you study civil engineering, and what motivated you to apply for the ESIPS program?

I initially pursued civil engineering due to family expectations. I then worked as a structural engineer in China before deciding to move to Sydney as an international student to pursue a Master of Professional Engineering (Civil). As I gained more experience, I became increasingly curious about the breadth of the engineering industry and how it can be applied in different ways to benefit society. Throughout my years of study and work, I have witnessed female engineers overcoming numerous obstacles and making invaluable contributions to the field.

When I saw the MCM graduate program, it really caught my attention. It was a six-month full-time industry placement for final-year graduates to immerse ourselves in real-life engineering projects. The program allowed me to pivot my career from structural engineering to working in the MCM project management team. 

What was your biggest highlight working at MCM?

During the MCM graduate program, I was involved in various projects which required a range of different skills. Delivering the ribbon repairing work at Australia National Maritime Museum was a standout project for me as it presented an opportunity to refine my skills in project management including overcoming quality assurance challenges.  After conducting thorough consultations and recording the quality of work by separating the scope into per lot plans; the job was finished within 4 weeks with comprehensive handover and great margin, which makes me so proud. 

What skills did you develop during your program?

Throughout the six-month program, I really enjoyed collaborating with the project teams and stakeholder management. It was rewarding to see first-hand the project development process, from inception and execution through to the handover. I polished my problem-solving and interpersonal skills during the program by managing project deliverables and stakeholder expectations. 

I also did some tendering work under the guidance of our executive team. This experience allowed me to observe how contracts work and to relate the textbook contract law knowledge I learned in university to practice.

How has the ESIPS program influenced your career goals or plans?

After completing the graduate program, I was offered a role at MCM. I am thrilled to continue working with this team. I love the workplace culture, and I am excited to pursue a career in project management. As a female engineer, I feel I can make a positive impact in the industry. 

Do you have any advice for other students wanting to take part in the ESIPS program?

If you’re thinking about it, just go for it. This is an invaluable opportunity for you to plan your future career path well ahead of your peers, so apply on time and be prepared for the interview because opportunities favor those who are well-prepared. Most importantly, be confident and have fun!
