What motivated you to apply for the MIPPS program?
I applied for the Major Industrial Project Placement Scheme Scholarship (MIPPS) program because I heard it was a good experience from previous students. I saw it as a fantastic opportunity to complete my thesis on energy studies related to the production of grease and speciality products while gaining real-world experience in the chemical engineering industry. There are not many opportunities like this so I took a chance and applied.
What was your experience of the program like? Can you share any highlights?
The highlight of MIPPS for me was being working on-site with the engineering team. It was really fun to collaborate with experienced engineers and learn from them. I was lucky to have a good industry supervisor who showed me a range of areas of the business and not just the project I was working on.
HMC is a leading manufacturer of high-performance greases and other specialty products. I conducted an energy study on the main production process at HMC to determine the plant's peak and idle demands. This information will be used to size a new heater system, as the current heaters rely on old technology and experience breakdowns. This project will save money and reduce carbon emissions, helping to meet HMC's ESG targets. I also spoke to suppliers about best practices in heater technology.
What were the biggest challenges, and how did you overcome them?
The project was larger than any assignment I had worked on previously, so it was a bit overwhelming at the start. Six months may sound like a long time, but it goes by quickly, so it was tough to complete everything on time. I found making small goals for the day and week helped break down the project into manageable sections.
What skills did you develop during your program?
During my time at HMC, I developed both my technical and soft skills. I became practised in mass and energy balances, modelling, Microsoft Excel, and various software applications such as SCADA systems. Additionally, I strengthened my soft skills, especially in communication, problem-solving and time management.
How has the MIPPS program influenced your career goals or plans?
My experience at HMC gave me valuable insights into the chemical engineering industry. I gained an understanding of the manufacturing sector and learned about other industries through my friends' experiences. The hands-on experience was particularly enjoyable, inspiring me to seek similar opportunities in the future. This experience has made me excited about my career as a chemical engineer.
Do you have any advice for other students wanting to take part in the MIPPS program?
Do it! It may seem daunting but it’s an amazing experience.
