I was motivated by the opportunity to contribute to solving a real-world problem in the field of orthopaedics as a Bachelor of Engineering Honours (Biomedical Engineering) and Bachelor of Science (Medical Science) student. Participating in the ESIPS program offered me the chance to challenge myself while gaining hands-on experience, working alongside industry experts, and establishing a strong foundation for my career in biomedical engineering.
My experience was incredibly rewarding and challenging. I felt like I was learning something new every single day. The one-on-one mentoring gave me invaluable guidance, while the exposure to cutting-edge technology was inspiring. There was a steep learning curve, but that made it all the more fulfilling.
One of the most exciting highlights was stepping into the operating room as a student and witnessing surgeries firsthand. This unique experience allowed me to see the tangible impact of pre-operative planning on arthroplasty procedures and real-world patient outcomes.
While the steep learning curve was a highlight, working full-time in a fast-paced environment with complex processes and regulations was the biggest challenge, especially while balancing a six-month turnaround for my thesis. I was so lucky that 360 Med Care created the perfect environment to overcome these hurdles.
My mentors and team were incredibly supportive and knowledgeable, offering exceptional guidance and encouragement. The team’s expertise and willingness to help boosted my confidence to tackle challenges and grow academically, professionally, and personally.
One of my key areas of growth was professional engagement and communication—I learned how to effectively communicate with people across various levels of expertise.
I also gained a solid understanding of the engineering principles underpinning joint replacement and orthopaedics. Something I had not anticipated was being exposed to the relationships between engineering and business – I learnt how commercial considerations influence engineering decisions within a business setting.
ESIPS provided me with an in-depth look into the fascinating world of arthroplasty and sparked a new passion. Not only did the experience broaden my understanding of potential career pathways, but it also gave me clarity on where to focus my expertise.
Working alongside accomplished professionals was incredibly motivating, inspiring me to aim for the same level of success and excellence in the field of orthopaedics.
If you’re considering applying for the ESIPS program, I highly encourage you to go for it—opportunities like this are rare and incredibly enriching. Once you’re in, dive headfirst into both thesis work and the company’s projects. Embrace every chance to learn, even if it feels daunting at first. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and ask questions; they’re both an essential part of the learning process and will ultimately make you more confident and capable.
