Professor Fariba Dehghani

Professor Fariba Dehghani

Professor Fariba Dehghani is a highly regarded researcher and the Director of the ARC Training Centre for the Australian Food Processing Industry. She has been instrumental in building a multidisciplinary research environment that stimulates the interface and intersect of engineering, science, medicine, pharmacy and agriculture. Her research has led to the:

  • design of pragmatic, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable techniques for processing materials
  • extraction of high-value and active compounds from natural resources for the treatment and prevention of chronic diseases such as infection and cardiovascular disease
  • synthesis of materials for musculoskeletal tissue repairs.

Her research is renowned in both academia and the food and biotech industries. She has established long-term collaborations within those industries and acquired substantive funding from national and international funding agencies.

Professor Dehghani has published more than 200 papers, and is an inventor on 13 patents, including nine with potential end users. She had a key role in developing a sterilisation process that has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for commercial application. In addition, her research resulted in the establishment of a start-up company that has received approval from the TGA to produce an injectable hydrogel for clinical applications. Professor Dehghani was selected by Engineers Australia as one of the 50 engineers for innovation in research in 2016.
