Thesis title: Hybridisation of Fuel Cells for UAV Propulsion

Thesis abstract:

The proliferation of small electric unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has enabled their use in an increasingly broad range of missions, limited only by the battery in mission range and endurance. Fuel cells have been proposed as a solutionto increasing range and endurance as they possess a much greater energy density. However, fuel cells suffer from poor dynamic performance and power density which can affect performance in dynamic demanding applications.

A hybrid system, where fuel cells are combined with a secondary fast acting secondary power source such as a battery or ultracapacitor could overcome these issues, but presents integration challenges to ensure optimal operation of both power sources for the anticipated propulsive load. This research aims to improve the performance of fuel cells for UAV applications through the investigation of hybridisation with batteries, ultracapacitors and other secondary power sources. This will deal with the challenges of integrating disparate power sources while ensuring system efficiency and flexibility are retained.
