Thesis title: Material properties and section capacity of cold-rolled aluminium alloys 5052

Thesis abstract:

The research will enhance the knowledge base for aluminium structures and is likely to stimulate innovation through the production of new aluminium cold-rolled products and applications other than those considered in this research. This research also has the potential to spark a similar focus on cold-rolled aluminium sections and the development of new
innovative products, particularly seeing that existing roll-formers for steel profiles can be
adjusted to accommodate aluminium sections, so that the investment required for producers of roll-formed steel products to also produce roll-formed aluminium sections is relatively minor. The design guidelines for cold-rolled aluminium sections to be developed as part of this research will benefit the end consumer as it will lead to substantially lower costs of corrosion resistant buildings than the solutions currently available. The latter requires expensive surface protection of cold-formed steel systems or the use of expensive cold-formed stainless steel members. Compared to extrusion, the roll-forming process is energy efficient and faster in terms of product length per minute production. Hence, the idea of producing aluminium structural sections by cold-rolling will help to maximize economic and environmental benefits to Australia.
