Thesis title: Behaviour and Design of Fabricated Concrete-Filled Stainless Steel Tubular Columns

Thesis abstract:

The project will study an innovative and sustainable solution for future steel-concrete (composite) infrastructure systems. The use of stainless steel has gained extreme popularity within the past decade considering its higher durability, corrosion resistance, and fire resistance and lower cost of maintenance compared to carbon steel. However, composite stainless steel members where stainless steel and concrete are utilised together are rather less explored. Furthermore, the limited number of tests on composite stainless steel members are also conducted on cold-formed small sections which do not resemble the member sizes and fabrication techniques typically used in practice. Consequently, the research will investigate the behaviour and design of large fabricated concrete-filled stainless steel tubular (CFSST) columns through comprehensive experimental and numerical investigations. The main aim of the project will be to explore the axial and flexural behaviours of these members and to provide practical design guidelines for CFSST columns.
