Thesis title: Appropriate Consensus Protocols for Blockchain

Thesis abstract:

Blockchain, a distrusted ledger system, the core technology behind the Bitcoin, now has been applied to other type of applications including smart contract, property registration, settlement of financial product's , etc. People try to use blockchain as an engine or platform to decentralise current applications, changing the current trust model of the system.
However, there are a huge number of unresolved issues about blockchain system and blockchain applications.
We identify the consensus protocol is the backbone of blockchain technologies stack. It determines the performance, stability and security of blockchain system. Consensus has been investigated extensively in the fault tolerant distributed computing.
In our research, we will focus on the consensus protocol, especially its stability and performance. Firstly, We will go through the existing blockchain consensus protocols. Then we also review the consensus protocols in the traditional distributed system. We also define the criteria to evaluate the consensus protocols. The final target of our research project is to find a way to archive consensus which will improve the performance and throughput of the blockchain system without sacrificing decentralised security model.
