What is mechatronic engineering?

Mechatronic engineering harnesses the power of mechanics, electrical systems and software to create computer-controlled ‘smart’ machines. It underpins the technology behind robotics and autonomous systems, automated manufacturing and ‘intelligent’ microprocessor-based technologies.

Mechatronic systems are all around us. When your washing machine senses the size of your washing and adds just the right amount of water, that’s mechatronic engineering. Mechatronic engineers created the anti-lock braking system in your car and the controls that take the elevator to the floor you select.

With skills and in-depth knowledge in computer hardware, software and networking, mechatronic engineers are versatile problem solvers.

  • Broaden your career prospects by combining your Bachelor of Engineering Honours (Mechatronic) with a second degree in arts, commerce, science (health or medical science) or laws. Combined degrees are five years in length – this means you do just one extra year to attain two full qualifications, with the same annual workload as a single degree student.
