Course resolutions

The course resolutions detailed in this page apply to all courses included in the table below under section 1 (course codes).

These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2014 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Coursework Policy 2021 (the 'Coursework Policy'), the Learning and Teaching Policy 2019, the Resolutions of the Faculty, University of Sydney (Student Academic Appeals) Rule 2021, the Academic Integrity Policy 2022 and the Academic Integrity Procedures 2022. 2   Attendance pattern

(1)  The attendance pattern for this course is full-time or part-time according to candidate choice.

3   Streams

(1)  The Bachelor of Design is available in the following streams:

(a)  Interaction Design.

(2)  The Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Advanced Studies is available in the following streams:

(a)  Interaction Design

(b)  Dalyell.

(3)  Completion of the Interaction Design stream is a requirement of each of the Bachelor of Design, and the Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Advanced Studies.

(4)  Completion of the Dalyell stream is not a requirement of either of the Bachelor of Design, or the Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Advanced Studies.

(a)  The requirements for completing the Dalyell stream are specified in Table D of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees and Part 6 of these resolutions.

(b)  Candidates who wish to exit the Dalyell stream should do so through the enrolment system or by contacting the Student Centre.

4   Cross-faculty management

(1)  Candidates in the Bachelor of Design, and the Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Advanced Studies will be under the supervision of the University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning.

(2)  The Head of School and Dean of the University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning has authority over any matter concerned with the Bachelor of Design, and the Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Advanced Studies, not otherwise dealt with in these resolutions.

5   Admission to candidature

(1)  Admission to this course is on the basis of:

(a)  a secondary school leaving qualification such as the NSW Higher School Certificate (including national and international equivalents); or

(b)  tertiary study; or

(c)  an approved preparation program.

(2)  English language requirements must be met where these are not demonstrated by sufficient qualifications taught in English.

(3)  Special admission pathways are open for mature aged applicants who do not possess a school leaving qualification, educationally disadvantaged applicants and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

(4)  Applicants are ranked by merit and offers for available places are issued according to the ranking. Details of admission policies are found in the Coursework Rule and Coursework Policy.

(5)  Admission to the Dalyell stream requires achievement of a minimum tertiary admission rank (ATAR) set by joint agreement of the Deans and Heads of School and Deans of University schools of all the faculties and University schools administering degrees offering the Dalyell stream, or equivalent.

6   Requirements for award

(1)  The units of study that may be taken for the Bachelor of Design, and the Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Advanced Studies are set out in:

(a)  Table A for the Bachelor of Design, and the Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Advanced Studies;

(b)  Table S of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees; and

(c) Table O of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees; and

(d)  For students in the Dalyell stream, Table D of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees.

(2)  Bachelor of Design

To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Design, a candidate must complete 144 credit points, comprising:

(a)  120 credit points from Table A, including:

(i)  48 credit points of core units of study;

(ii)  48 credit points of stream studio units of study; and

(iii) 24 credit points of stream selective units of study; and

(b)  24 credit points of:

(i)  stream selective or elective units of study from Table A; or

(ii) elective units of study from Table S.

(3)  Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Advanced Studies

To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Advanced Studies, a candidate must complete 192 credit points, comprising:

(a)  84 credit points from Table A, including:

(i)  48 credit points of core units; and

(ii)  36 credit points of studio units;

(b)  a major (48 credit points) as specified in Table S for the Bachelor of Advanced Studies;

(c) for students not enrolled in the Dalyell stream, at least 6 credit points of units of study in the Open Learning Environment as specified in Table O;

(d)  for students enrolled in the Dalyell stream, at least 12 credit points of Dalyell units of study as specified in Table D.

(e)  students previously, but no longer, enrolled in the Dalyell stream who have completed at least 6 credit points of Dalyell units of study are not required to complete any units of study in the Open Learning Environment;

(f) at least 24 credit points at 4000-level from Table A or Table S, including a community, industry or entrepreneurship project of 12 to 36 credit points; and

(g)  where appropriate:

(i)  selective units from Table A; or

(ii)  elective units from Table A and Table S, Table O; or

(iii)  for students enrolled in the Dalyell stream, Table D in the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees.

7   Progression

(1)  Progression within the Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Advanced Studies

(a)  Except with the permission of the Program Director, candidates outside the Dalyell stream must complete the requirements listed in section 6(3) before progressing to 4000-level units.

(2)  Progression within the Dalyell stream

(a)  With the permission of the Dalyell coordinator, candidates in the Dalyell stream may attempt units at higher levels than the usual sequence through a program, major or minor.

(b)  In each year of study, or over each 48 credit point block, Dalyell candidates must achieve a Cross-Semester Average Mark (CSAM) at a level determined by joint agreement of the Deans and Heads of School and Deans of University schools of all the faculties and University schools administering degrees offering the Dalyell stream.

(c) Dalyell candidates who do not maintain the required CSAM may continue in any other major, minor, program or stream into which they were admitted, but will not remain in the Dalyell stream.

(d)  Dalyell candidates enrolled who do not satisfy requirements for the Dalyell stream, but who otherwise meet requirements for the award course in which they are enrolled, will graduate from the award course without the Dalyell stream.

(e)  Students may not study units additional to the maximum credit points for their award course except with approval of the Associate Dean.

8   Requirements for honours

(1)  Honours is available for students who meet the admission requirements for a Bachelor Honours degree, after completing the requirements for the Bachelor of Design, or the Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Advanced Studies, as specified in section 6. 

9     Award of the degree

(1)  Candidates for the Bachelor of Design and Bachelor Advanced Studies will be awarded a separate testamur for each degree completed.

(a)  Candidates who have completed requirements for the Interaction Design stream will be awarded a Bachelor of Design (Interaction Design) and Bachelor of Advanced Studies.

10   Cross-institutional study

(1)   Cross-institutional study is available in this course under conditions specified in the Resolutions of the University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning.

11   International exchange

(1)   The University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning encourages candidates in this course to participate in international exchange programs as set out in the Resolutions of the University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning.

12   Course transfer

(1)   A candidate may transfer from the Bachelor of Design to the Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Advanced Studies in accordance with these resolutions.

(2)   A candidate may abandon the Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Advanced Studies combined degree and complete the Bachelor of Design in accordance with these resolutions and receive up to 108 credit points for work completed in the Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Advanced Studies.

(3)   Completion of the Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Advanced Studies after having previously transferred out will require a new application for admission to candidature for that course and completion in accordance with the resolutions governing that degree.

13   Credit for previous study

(1)   Credit transfer is subject to the provisions of the Coursework Policy and the Resolutions of the University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning or, in the case of a major or minor offered by another faculty, any relevant resolutions of that faculty.

14   Transitional provisions

(1)  Sections 8 and 9 of these resolutions apply to all students in the Bachelor of Design and the Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Advanced Studies regardless of when they commenced their candidature. 

(2)  All other sections of these resolutions apply to students who commenced after 1 July 2024
