Computer Science

Study in the discipline of Computer Science is offered by the School of Information Technologies in the Faculty of Engineering and IT. Units of study in this major are available at standard and advanced level.

Program structure and content

Computer science involves the study of computers and the programs that run on computers. This stream will appeal to more technically-minded students who wish to contribute to the future development and support of technology.

First year planning for a Computer Science major

Essential: 12 credit points of Junior Computer Science Units.
Recommended: INFO1103, INFO1105/1905, 12 credit points of Junior Mathematics and 24 credit points of electives, including PHIL1012 and INFO1003.

Requirements for a major

For a major in Computer Science the minimum requirement is 24 credit points chosen from the senior units of study listed for this subject area.

Students enrolled in non-IT degrees or majors, are eligible (upon application) for a Minor in Information Technology if they complete at least 18 credit points of intermediate or above units of study offered by the School of IT, within a completed degree. Honours

Students who want to enrol in Honours should apply to the Faculty of Engineering and IT (for BCST/BIT) or the Faculty of Science (for BSc) at pre-enrolment time. Selection will be finalised in January, once end-of-year results are known.

You must have completed your pass degree before starting Honours (that is, you cannot do Honours concurrently while filling in missing units from your first three years of study).

Any student who is considering Honours should begin to identify an appropriate research topic and supervisor as early as possible. The Honours year starts in February, 2 weeks before lectures begin.
