Professional Accounting coursework programs - Course structures

Course structures


Master of Professional Accounting

To be awarded the Master of Professional Accounting, students complete units of study totalling 96 credit points, comprising:

  • 78 credit points in core units of study: 36 credit points in foundation level units of study, 36 credit points in advanced units of study, and a six credit point capstone unit of study; and
  • 18 credit points in elective units of study.


Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting

To be awarded the Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting, students complete units of study totalling 48 credit points, comprising:

  • 30 credit points in core units of study: 18 credit points in foundation level units and 12 credit points in advanced level units; and
  • 18 credit points in elective units of study.

Core units of study

Master of Professional Accounting

Students enrolled in the Master of Professional Accounting complete their core units of study as follows:

(1) Foundation

Students must complete all the following foundation units of study (36 credit points):

  • ACCT5001 Accounting Principles (must be completed in first semester of study)
  • BUSS5001 Firms, Markets and Business Management
  • CLAW5001 Legal Environment of Business
  • FINC5001 Capital Markets and Corporate Finance
  • INFS5000 Accounting Information Systems
  • QBUS5002 Quantitative Methods for Accounting.


(2) Advanced

Students must complete all the following advanced units of study (36 credit points):

  • ACCT5002 Managerial Accounting and Decision Making
  • ACCT6001 Intermediate Financial Reporting
  • ACCT6007 Contemporary Issues in Auditing
  • ACCT6010 Advanced Financial Reporting
  • CLAW6002 Corporate Structures in Practice
  • CLAW6026 Taxation Law and Practice.


(3) Capstone

Students must complete the following six-credit point capstone in their final semester of study:

  • ACCT6120 Corporate Governance and Accountability.

Note: Students should enrol in core units for this program as set out in the progression guide. Students who do not follow the progression guide may experience difficulties completing within the minimum duration.

Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting

Students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting complete their core units of study as follows:

(1) Foundation

Students must complete the following foundation units of study (18 credit points):

  • ACCT5001 Accounting Principles
  • CLAW5001 Legal Environment of Business
  • FINC5001 Capital Markets and Corporate Finance.


(2) Advanced

Students must complete the following advanced units of study (12 credit points):

  • ACCT5002 Managerial Accounting and Decision Making
  • ACCT6001 Intermediate Financial Reporting.

+ Students who achieve a WAM of 65%+ in a minimum of eight units of study (48 credit points) in the Master’s degree may apply for an assessable work integrated learning unit.

^ Students who achieve a WAM of 65%+ in a minimum of four units of study (24 credit points) in the Master's degree may apply for the NEXT Innovation.

* Not offered for 2017.
