What is a major?

Whilst a stream defines the primary disciplinary focus of your course (e.g. a Bachelor of Civil Engineering, or a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering), a major is an area of specialisation within your course (e.g. both Civil and Mechanical Engineers might wish to focus on Environmental Engineering). Upon completion of your selected major you will have a broad understanding of that subject area and the ability to focus on, and carry out further research in that field. You can choose from 17 engineering majors.

Depending on your engineering stream, some majors may require additional study. Check the information on individual majors for information on which engineering streams they most closely align with.

A major requires the completion of 24 credit points chosen from units of study listed in the table for that major; satisfying any additional requirements specified for the major; and the completion of a thesis project that is deemed relevant to the topic of the major.

Majors are optional, there is no requirement to complete a major.
