The course resolutions detailed in this page apply to all courses included in the table below under section 1 (course codes).
These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2014 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Coursework Policy 2021 (the 'Coursework Policy'), the Learning and Teaching Policy 2019, the Resolutions of the Faculty, University of Sydney (Student Academic Appeals) Rule 2021, the Academic Integrity Policy 2022 and the Academic Integrity Procedures 2022. The attendance pattern for this course is part time. All units of study are only available in online mode.
This masters degree is an advanced learning masters course, as defined by the Coursework Policy.
The embedded courses in this sequence are:
(1) the Graduate Certificate in Medical Imaging Science
(2) the Graduate Diploma in Medical Imaging Science
(3) the Master of Medical Imaging Science
Providing candidates satisfy the admission requirements for each stage, a candidate may progress to the award of any of the courses in this sequence. Only the longest award completed will be conferred.
Available places will be offered to qualified applicants based on merit, according to the following admission criteria.
(1) Admission to candidature for the Graduate Certificate of Medical Imaging Science requires:
(a) A bachelors degree or higher award in Medical Radiation Sciences from the University of Sydney, or qualifications deemed by the Faculty to be equivalent. In exceptional circumstances the relevant delegate may admit applicants without these qualifications who, in the opinion of the Faculty, have qualifications and evidence of experience and achievement sufficient to successfully undertake the award.
(b) Current unconditional registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency or equivalent international registration.
(c) Evidence of any other minimum standards specified by the Faculty of Medicine and Health.
(2) Admission to candidature for the Graduate Diploma of Medical Imaging Science requires:
(a) A bachelors degree or higher award in Medical Radiation Sciences from the University of Sydney, or a qualification deemed by the Faculty to be equivalent, or completion of the requirements of the embedded graduate certificate in this discipline. In exceptional circumstances the Faculty may admit applicants without these qualifications who, in the opinion of the Faculty, have qualifications and evidence of experience and achievement sufficient to successfully undertake the award.
(b) Current unconditional registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency or equivalent international registration.
(c) Evidence of any other minimum standards specified by the Faculty of Medicine and Health.
(3) Admission to candidature for the Master of Medical Imaging Science requires:
(a) One of the following qualifications, awarded in the fields of Medical Imaging Sciences, Radiation Therapy, or Nuclear Medicine:
(i) a masters degree, or
(ii) bachelors degree with a credit average, or
(iii) an honours bachelors degree from the University of Sydney, or
(iv) medical qualifications deemed by the faculty to be equivalent, or
(v) completion of the requirements of the embedded graduate diploma or graduate certificate in this discipline, or qualifications deemed by the Faculty to be equivalent
(b) current unconditional registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency or equivalent international registration.
(c) Evidence of any other minimum standards specified by the Faculty of Medicine and Health.
(4) Applicants for admission under the Indigenous Facilitated Entry Scheme must be able to demonstrate that they are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders as required by the current Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy.
(5) Applicants for admission under the Indigenous Facilitated Entry Scheme may be admitted on the basis of:
(a) a demonstrated sustained academic performance to a standard considered satisfactory by the Executive Dean or Deputy Executive Dean with a minimum average mark of 60 out of 100 or equivalent, in either:
(i) a bachelor's degree approved by the Executive Dean or Deputy Executive Dean, or
(ii) a postgraduate degree approved by the Executive Dean or Deputy Executive Dean.
(b) current unconditional registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency or equivalent international registration.
(6) If an applicant is admitted through the Indigenous Facilitated Entry Scheme on the basis of a postgraduate degree, that degree must:
(a) have been completed within ten years before 1 January of the year in which the applicant is seeking admission; and
(b) be either:
(i) a postgraduate degree accredited at level 8, 9, or 10 under the Australian Qualifications Framework, from an Australian university or self-accrediting higher education institution; or
(ii) a postgraduate degree at an overseas university listed in Australia’s National Information Centre for qualifications recognition in the Department of Education, Skills and Employment’, equivalent to an Australian postgraduate degree accredited at Level 8, 9, or 10.
(7) Applicants for admission under the Rural Applicants Facilitated Entry Scheme must be able to demonstrate that they are of Australian regional and remote area origin as specified in the current Coursework Policy.
(8) Applicants for admission under the Rural Applicants Facilitated Entry Scheme may be admitted on the basis of:
(a) a demonstrated sustained academic performance to a standard considered satisfactory by the Executive Dean or Deputy Executive Dean with a minimum average mark of 60 out of 100 or equivalent, in either:
(i) a bachelor's degree approved by the Executive Dean or Deputy Executive Dean, or
(ii) a postgraduate degree approved by the Executive Dean or Deputy Executive Dean;
(b) current unconditional registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency or equivalent international registration.
(1) The units of study that may be taken for these courses are set out in the Unit of Study Tables for the Graduate Certificate / Graduate Diploma / Master of Medical Imaging Science and the School of Health Sciences Postgraduate electives tables.
(2) To qualify for the award of the Graduate Certificate of Medical Imaging Science a candidate must complete 24 credit points, including:
(a) 6-12 credit points of core units of study;
(b) 12-18 credit points of elective units of study, from the Medical Imaging Science elective units of study.
(3) To qualify for the award of the Graduate Diploma of Medical Imaging Science a candidate must complete 48 credit points, including:
(a) 12 credit points of core units of study;
(b) 36 credit points of elective units of study from the Medical Imaging Science elective units of study table. Selection of these units may count towards one specialisation;
(4) To qualify for the award of the Master of Medical Imaging Science a candidate must complete 72 credit points, including:
(a) 12 credit points of core units of study;
(b) 42-54 credit points of elective units of study, from the Medical Imaging Science elective units of study table. Selection of these units may count towards up to two specialisations; and
(c) 0-12 credit points from the School of Health Sciences Postgraduate electives table; and
(d) 6 credit points of capstone units of study.
Completion of a specialisation is not a requirement of the course. Candidates enrolled in the Graduate Diploma may complete one specialisation. Candidates enrolled in the Master of Medical Imaging Science have the option of completing up to two specialisations. A specialisation requires the completion of 24 credit points chosen from units of study listed in the table for that specialisation. Units of study counted towards one specialisation may not count toward any other specialisation completed. The specialisations available are:
(1) Breast Imaging
(2) Computed Tomography
(3) Hybrid Imaging
(4) Magnetic Resonance Imaging
(1) The Coursework Policy specifies the general conditions for the granting of credit for previous study for these courses, except that credit will not be granted for recognised prior learning older than 5 years at the time of first enrolment.
A candidate for the masters degree or graduate diploma may elect to discontinue study and graduate with a shorter award from this embedded sequence, provided the requirements of the shorter award have been met.
(1) These resolutions apply to students who commence their candidature after 1 January 2025.
(2) Students who commenced their candidature prior to 1 January 2025 complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions in force at the time of their commencement.
