Sydney University International House Alumni Association

Global friendships that stand the test of time
There are now thousands of students who have lived at International House and we have a vibrant alumni culture.

Our mission

Sydney University International House Alumni Association (SUIHAA) has been inspired by the commitment of the house to international understanding and friendship, and for most of us this influence has remained a theme of our lives with our experiences in the house being important formative memories. We formed enduring friendships in the house that continue to enrich our lives.

SUIHAA's constitution (PDF 32KB) commits us to: encouraging and supporting communication among alumni, promoting our engagement with International House and the University, and working with International House "in promoting the aims and ideals of international understanding within the University of Sydney and the wider community."

Ongoing areas of activity

  • We support ongoing communication among SUIHAA members – by all kinds of methods.
  • We partner with the current Members' Association (IHMA) with events that bring alumni and current residents together. SUIHAA members from around the world send cards and calendars to new residents in February at the start of the academic year.
  • SUIHAA members join together to support initiatives that promote the ideals of international understanding and friendship. For example, we raised $100,000 in 2008-12 (approx.) to support the founding of the Bo Children’s Hospital in Sierra Leone. The Hospital was originally a proposal of Dr Nuli Lemoh, a SUIHAA and Rotary member. We are delighted that the hospital is now functioning to save children’s lives, and generating some income with ongoing support of Bo, Sydney and UK Rotary clubs, as well as SUIHAA and IHMA.

Future of International House

The University has decided that the International House buildings are coming to the end of their lives. Residents are being moved out at the end of 2020. Alumni are concerned that this "temporary" relocation is not time-limited and that the building proposed to accommodate residents will not support and sustain the International House program.

The IH community is working hard for the future of IH. SUIHAA has a two-strand action plan:

  • Communication, media and advocacy.
  • Research and action to preserve the Rotunda (designed by Walter Bunning).

Please contact us if you can help in either of these areas. To stay up to date with news of our campaign, read our initial statement (PDF, 490 KB) or see our latest newsletter.

Upcoming events

If you recall the delicious BBQ lunch we enjoyed in mid-2017 among our 50-year celebration events, you won’t want to miss this feast!

Alumni from all generations are urged to come along as we have pulled-out all stops out to make this an evening to remember.

Attendance and dinner is free, and a cash bar (with limited bar tab) will be available. The event will include short speeches by representatives from each decade of the house's history.

When: 6-9pm, Friday 31 May
Where: International House
RSVP: Please register online by Friday 24 May

SUIHAA's Annual General Meeting is held in September each year and is a time for alumni to catch up and reflect upon the year's achievements. The Committee for the following year is elected as well. After the AGM, drinks and canapes will be served, light entertainment will be provided and tours of the House will be run for alumni who have not been back for a while. All alumni are invited and encouraged to attend!

A regular annual reunion event held in April at International House, featuring musical performances from many of the current residents of the house.

Held during the evening, this reunion provides light refreshments and provides a unique opportunity for alumni to meet while accompanied by live musical performances from International House's most talented residents.

Calendarfest is a SUIHAA initiative to connect alumni with residents of the House through a simple gift - the giving of a calendar to new residents at the start of each academic year. We're looking for alumni willing to kindly donate a calendar from their home country or region to Calendarfest to be given out as part of this initiative.

The Rosemary Berrick Photography Competition, organised annually by SUIHAA, celebrates Rosemary Berrick, who was instrumental in establishing International House's library and archives.

The 2018 competition winner was Meruse Oishi, with the People's Choice being awarded to Kush Baheti. Thank you to everyone who participated.
