International House advances to futsal finals

22 March 2019
Following a successful opening round of futsal, International House has advanced to the final round of the tournament in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

Intramural sport kicked off last Friday night with an excellent opening round of futsal at the Sydney University Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Our women’s team started proceedings with a hard-fought match against Regiment Building, going down 9-0. Despite the early setback, the team rallied in their second game with goals from Gabriella Lindsay, Manasa Marasani and Tahsin Samia to defeat Sydney University Village 5-0 and proceed to the finals.

Our men’s team, led by Nimit Batavia and Víctor Gutiérrez Marcos, defeated St. John’s 5-0 in their opening match. Nimit, who started as striker, was clinical in front of goal, scoring two goals with assists from Víctor in midfield. The men backed up this performance by downing the Darlo Bears 8-2 in their final game including four goals to Víctor and three to Nimit.

International House Members' Association Sports Coordinator, Senal Munasinghe, said he was proud of both performances.

“We’ve trained hard for the competition, and our teams were excellent in the opening round. I hope our residents will come and cheer us on next Friday at SUSF,”

"In true International House spirit, our men's and women's teams fielded players from four nations in their respective starting sides."

International House women will take on Urbanest in the opening match of the finals at 6pm, with our men to tackle Queen Mary Building at 7pm. If successful in these matches, the teams will advance to the semi-finals of the tournament.
