Director of International House, Jessica Carroll, provides an update on redevelopment plans for the current building.
I wish to advise that it is with sincere regret that International House at the University of Sydney will close its current buildings from 31 December 2020. The current IH building is reaching its end of life and is marked for redevelopment. It has been a long road in reaching this difficult decision, but I am pleased that the future IH will continue with capacity to accommodate more residents from around the world.
The International House (IH) council has carried a motion to suspend operations from 1 January 2021 until a redevelopment has been completed on the current site. The council decision recognises the 1962 Trust Deed which sets out a number of requirements for the operation of IH. These requirements mean it is not feasible for IH to operate until such time as the redevelopment has been completed.
International House staff, residents and other members of the wider community have been informed of the decision to close International House in separate communications.
IH residents continuing to study at the University in 2021 will be offered priority for on-campus accommodation and will be supported in this process.
I would like to thank you for your continued support over the years, especially your support for our residents and staff. I hope that you will continue to support our residents and the IH mission when the new house opens its doors in a few years’ time.
We live in challenging times but the IH community is strong and resilient.
If you have any questions or enquiries regarding the above, please send an email to: ih.info@sydney.edu.au
Keep safe and well.
Yours sincerely
Jessica Carroll,
Director, International House
