Young lawyer fuses comedy with law in winning performance

The competition was established in 1993, featuring young lawyers, humorous legal topics and an enthusiastic audience.

Third year Arts/Law student, Floyd Alexander-Hunt has won the NSW Golden Gavel Competition for 2017.

It is open to all NSW Young Lawyer members as well as law students. It’s a chance for young or aspiring lawyers to demonstrate their advocacy skills in a popular event.

Floyd was excited to have won the competition. “I was a bit shocked to have beaten actual lawyers. I looked over at my mum and we both did a little dance.”

“My greatest joy in life is comedy and making an idiot of myself on stage. While this may not be advantageous in law tutorials or exams I thought it might be useful in this competition,” explained Floyd.

She regularly performs stand-up comedy throughout Sydney venues and found that the competition provided her a niche opportunity to fuse her skills in stand-up with her opinions and knowledge of the law.

Floyd is looking forward to contesting the national competition.

“It’s on a boat and I cannot wait to do it all again. I am given 24 hours to write a five-minute comedy speech on a specific topic, so there is no point stressing at this stage. Besides, I have exams to worry about!” she said.

Floyd is enjoying her studies at Sydney Law School, after spending time at drama school. Her highlights have included performing in the Law Revue, having knowledgeable lecturers and tutors who challenge her, as well as all the reading.

“Despite my love of performance, I hated not having a reading list at drama school,” she said.

“I’d be interested in becoming either a barrister, producer or writer. I would like to perform comedy and write my own musical one day,” she said.

As for the future, Floyd would like to utilise her skills in comedy and public speaking in some form.

Congratulations for winning the Golden Gavel Competition, Floyd!
