Overseas exchange opportunities
Explore the captivating and challenging aspects of overseas study
Studying overseas is an exciting opportunity to broaden your academic experience. Our exchange program allows you to participate in one of our exclusive agreements with a range of prestigious law schools across the world.
A semester abroad is the perfect accompaniment to the strong global focus of the Sydney LLB and JD. Whether you intend to work internationally or locally, every field of law is increasingly engaging with cross-border issues. It’s a crowded and competitive graduate market, and an exchange provides you with a point of differentiation, a means of standing out from the crowd.
You can benefit from two types of exchange programs: University-wide and faculty-specific. University-wide study abroad and exchange programs are administered by Sydney Abroad, the University’s study abroad and exchange office, while faculty-specific exchange programs are administered solely by Sydney Law School through the Law International Exchange Elective unit.
If you are proficient in another language, you may be able to go on exchange at universities where the language of instruction is not English.
With up to 40 universities to choose from, you can make a selection to suit your academic and intellectual passions.
I think the exchange has been of benefit professionally, chiefly by the growth in maturity and perspective the experience gives you. Those attributes are beneficial to the quality of your work in any workplace, and your ability to build strong working relationships. More to the point, though, is that one feels pressure from the law school environment to focus only on study and work. Whilst those things are important, your growth as a person and the range of experiences you have had in life are equally, if not more, important. I am glad I had that realisation in time to apply for exchange, and I am very glad that I decided to challenge myself to have the experience, because it was absolutely brilliant.

Studying in Vienna exposed me to more than I could have ever imagined. I learnt so much about EU law and the Austrian legal system which I found very interesting as it was so different to Australian law and which I know will be very useful for a career in international commercial law in the long run. I made lifelong friendships with people from all around the world who I still communicate with daily and I was able to immerse myself into the cultural life of a city where going to the opera on a weeknight or visiting palaces for a picnic on the weekend is customary.
