The University Centre for Rural Health

Supporting excellence in rural clinical practice

The University Centre for Rural Health is a multidisciplinary centre for education in rural health for medical, nursing and allied health students, as well as continuing professional development for rural health practitioners.

About the centre

The University Centre for Rural Health (UCRH) is a collaborative academic hub for rural health development, located in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales.  It is a joint venture between the University of Sydney, Western Sydney University, the University of Wollongong and Southern Cross University and operates in close collaboration with the Northern NSW Local Health Network and all providers of health services on the NSW North Coast.

With facilities in Lismore, Grafton and Murwillumbah, the centre aims to provide the best possible educational experience in rural health for medical, nursing and allied health students, and to facilitate continuing professional development for rural health practitioners.

The centre has a strong interest in health services and systems research and development and is uniquely and ideally placed to support interdisciplinary education, and to integrate research into our education programs.

Placements

We offer clinical placements for medical, nursing and allied health students from universities all over Australia, and partner with the local health workforce to provide high-quality student placements in a rural setting.

Our footprint covers Grafton to the NSW/Queensland border with 3 placement hubs (offices) in Grafton, Lismore and Murwillumbah.

Our research

The University Centre for Rural Health (UCRH) conducts a vibrant research program focusing on the healthcare needs of rural populations around Australia while building research leadership and research capacity within the Northern Rivers region.

Currently three priority research areas for the region have been identified through consultative processes. These priorities will evolve over time in response to emerging community health needs.

  • Health systems and service research
  • Population health and equity
  • Medical and allied health education and workforce development

Visit the UCRH research page for more information on our research areas and staff.
