Ryan Catahan – Bachelor of Nursing (Advanced Studies)

After studying a Bachelor of Nursing (Advanced Studies), Ryan became a Registered Nurse in the emergency department at Westmead Hospital. During his time at uni, he participated in a range of clinical placements to find out what it’s really like to be a nurse and to figure out what type of nursing he wanted to work in.

In his own words

“I am currently employed as a Registered Nurse in the emergency department at Westmead Public Hospital. My main responsibility is to deliver safe and efficient nursing care in a highly critical and busy environment while working within a team.

“Not a single day is ever the same, our patients come from different multicultural backgrounds with different types of illnesses. I love the fast-paced, challenging environment and the emergency department is the place to be if you are an adrenaline junkie. I get satisfaction throughout the day knowing that I’ve contributed to improving someone’s health.

“I studied nursing because I wanted a career that was flexible with plenty of opportunities, a career with varied learning pathways to choose from, where you can learn a multitude of skills along the way.

“My advice for students is to be organised - don’t leave your assessments until the last minute! Utilise the university’s support systems: get help from your tutors, facilitators and the student centre if you need it.

“The best thing that came out of my uni journey is that I’ve made life-long friends. Enjoy the process of your learning experience!”
