From the Predynastic Period to the New Kingdom
Join us online for a talk from UK-based Egyptologist Dr Geoffrey Killen as he discusses the history and development of ancient Egyptian furniture.
Discover how ancient Egyptian furniture developed as Dr Killen takes us through extant examples from the Predynastic Period through to the wide range of decorative and embellished furniture manufactured during the New Kingdom.
Dr Killen will discuss how furniture was crudely manufactured during the Predynastic Period due to the quality of timber and tools used. However, with the unification of Egypt and the foundation of the 1st Dynasty around 3100 BC, the introduction of copper woodworking tools created opportunities for carpenters to make furniture using a range of sophisticated woodworking joints.
Dr Killen will also give a short practical demonstration of how wood was fashioned into furniture using a set of replica ancient Egyptian woodworking tools.
Please note: Dr Killen is based in the UK and will be presenting from there. When reserving your ticket you may opt to 'view from the Museum' as we will be streaming the webinar in our auditorium or you can 'view from home'.
Geoffrey Killen is a leading ancient furniture historian, technologist and Egyptologist who gained his PhD at the University of Liverpool, where he specialised in Ramesside woodworking. He has studied the collections of Egyptian furniture at most of the major world museums, including the Egyptian Antiquities Museum, Cairo.
