Dr Daniel Blinkhorn

Biographical details

Daniel Blinkhorn is a multi-international award winning composer, sound and digital media artist whose music gravitates around a synchronicity of frequency, texture, gesture, space, location and motion, all of which form (often metaphorical) frameworks within a given piece. Although often working in the electroacoustic, videophonic and ecoacoustic domains, Blinkhorn's output includes chamber, symphonic and wind orchestra works, sound installations, music for film, dance, radiophonic composition and various hybrid/ intermedia environments.

Recent examples of work illustrating the composer's interest in areas combining electroacoustic's, new media art and environmental sound can be seen in the suite of works entitled 'frostbYte'; for acoustic instruments, electroacoustic's, environmental sound and video. The suite features numerous field recordings and video footage the composer made whilst on expedition throughout the North Pole region of Svalbard in 2011. The piece ‘red sound’ from the suite has been described as ’a true masterpiece, that captures and presents poetically the essence of human fascination with a timeless natural landscape’ (International Computer Music Association Jury, 2013).

Blinkhorn's works are increasingly performed, exhibited and presented internationally, and his compositions have received nearly 30 international and national composition awards, with recent activities (2009 - 2015) including;Winner of a prestigious 'Giga-Hertz-Preis für elektronische Musik | Giga-Hertz-Award' - Germany, winner of both categories for 2 different works at ‘>SYNC.2015’ – International Festival / Competition of Electroacoustic music and Multimedia, Yekaterinburg ElectroAcoustic Music Studios, M.P.Mussorgsky Conservatory, Russia, winner of the '9th International Composition Competition - Città di Udine', Italy, winner of the 'International Computer Music Association' - 'Asia Oceania Award' - 2013, winner of the '12th as well as the 9th (2011 - 2009) International Electroacoustic Composition Competitions, 'Música Viva', Portugal and winner of the '8e concours international d'art radiophonique Luc Ferrari, pour sons fixés et instrument', France.

He is the 2010 ABC Radio National Media Arts Fellow, and a 2011 Churchill Fellow, has worked in a wide variety of creative, academic, research and performative contexts, is the representative member for composition at ‘Music Australia’ (2012 – 2018) and has been a visiting scholar and artist at the University of Virginia, Music Department, the Conservatory of Music, University of Kansas City Missouri, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver and faculty member for 'Ecosono Alaska', a joint initiative between Ecosono Institute and Alaska Pacific University, Anchorage, Alaska.

Blinkhorn has undertaken numerous composition residencies internationally (La Muse En Circuit, Paris, ZKM| Center for Art and Media, Institute for Music and Acoustics, Germany, CMMAS - Centro Mexicano para la Música y las Artes Sonoras, Mexico, Centre de Arts, Montreal and Visby international Centre for Composers, Sweden,) and is an ardent location and ecoacoustic sound recordist, where he has embarked upon a growing number of expeditions throughout Africa, Alaska, Amazon, Mexico, West Indies, Northern Europe, Middle East, Australia and the high Arctic/ North Pole region of Svalbard.

Whilst entirely autodidactic in electroacoustic music and digital media, he has formally studied at a number of Australian universities including, COFA - UNSW and the University of Wollongong where his doctoral degree in composition was recommended for special commendation. Other degrees include a BMus (hons), MMus, and a MA(r).
