The University of Sydney placed 58th out of 1662 institutions worldwide and fifth in Australia in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2022.

Now in its 19th year, the THE World University Rankings  judge universities across citations, research, teaching, international outlook and industry income.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Duncan Ivison commented, “While rankings results often vary year-to-year the quality of our teaching and research remains strong and is backed up by feedback from our students and our public impact on major issues, including the current pandemic.”

“We’re pleased we have maintained our performance among the top 60 universities in the world, with research our strongest area and with improvements in performance for teaching and international outlook. I am grateful to our academic and support staff for their ongoing dedication to outstanding research and teaching during a period that has been full of disruption and uncertainty.”

Some of the research that the University of Sydney has produced includes modelling the likely impact of coronavirus lockdown measures on mental health, a multidisciplinary team leading a collaboration to produce a simple, low-cost ventilator to assist the COVID-19 effort and being at the forefront of the race to understand the genetics of what causes the disease in humans

Our researchers have uncovered some of the ways COVID-19 affects the heart and identified potential drug treatments, collaborated on research identifying the immune response associated with protection from COVID-19 and are working on needle-free vaccine delivery for at-risk groups

The University has performed strongly in major rankings this year – THE Impact Rankings (2nd in world, 1st in Australia for a second year), QS World University Rankings (up two places to 38th in the world) and ARWU Rankings (up five places to 69th in the world).
